First-Timer’s Guide to Cannes Lions: How to Navigate, Network & Not Burn Out

Written by Craftsman+ | 06/3/25

Each June, the global creative industry descends on Cannes, France—not just for the views, but for a celebration of world-class storytelling, bold branding, and the ideas that shape culture. The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity (June 16–20, 2025) isn’t just another advertising conference. It’s the event where agencies, brands, tech innovators, and creators converge to see the most impactful work in the world—and imagine what’s next.

At CRAFTSMAN+, we live for the intersection of creativity and innovation, and we know that Cannes is where some of the most transformative conversations happen. But, with over 15,000 attendees, award shows, beachfront activations, and industry giants sharing the stage, Cannes can feel equal parts inspiring and overwhelming—especially for first-timers.

Whether you're showing up with a shortlist entry, a packed calendar of meetings, or simply a wide-open mind, here are 5 essential tips to make the most of your first Cannes Lions experience.

1. Know Your Mission—Then Build Around It

With panels, parties, podcasts, and yacht activations all happening simultaneously, the #1 rookie mistake is trying to do everything. Don’t.

Instead, define your Cannes mission before you touch down in Nice. Are you there to learn? Network? Scout new partners? Spotlight your brand? Your goals should shape your calendar. Once you know your “why,” every RSVP and beach rendezvous becomes a strategic “yes”—or a gracious pass.

PRO TIP: Create a flexible framework with one “anchor event” each day (like a talk or meeting) and build in buffers for spontaneous invites. Some of the best Cannes moments aren’t on your calendar.

2. Dress Light, Walk Smart

Here’s the reality: you’ll be clocking 20,000+ steps per day, sweating in the Riviera sun, and maybe sprinting from the Palais to a panel across town. Cannes style may be coastal chic, but function trumps fashion when it comes to footwear and day bags.

Bring:

  • Comfortable shoes (swap in heels or dress shoes after you arrive at the soirée)

  • Lightweight, breathable outfits

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a water bottle

  • External battery pack and charging cords

  • A foldable fan or mister (seriously)

PRO TIP: Cannes is not the place for laptop lugging. Ditch the tech unless absolutely necessary. You’ll thank us when you’re weaving through crowds on the Croisette.

3. Master the Map: Palais, Beaches, and the Fringe

You’ll hear two words a lot at Cannes: Palais and Fringe. The Palais des Festivals is the official hub—home to keynote talks, award ceremonies, and more. But much of the action happens on the Fringe: beach lounges, hotel terraces, rooftop bars, and branded villas.

Key landmarks to know:

  • Carlton and Martinez Hotels – big brand takeovers and meeting points

  • Gutter Bar (72 Croisette) – legendary late-night hangout

  • Carlton Terrace – sunset mingling hotspot

  • JW Marriott & Mondrian – consistent crowd activity

PRO TIP: Want to find the crowd? Follow the rosé. And keep a lightweight day bag with essentials—you won’t see your hotel until midnight.

4. Network With Intention (and a Little Serendipity)

Yes, Cannes is about creativity. But it’s also about connection. From the coffee line to the Carlton Terrace, every moment is a networking moment—if you’re open to it.

First-timer networking strategies:

  • Set daily networking intentions—who do you want to meet?

  • Use the Cannes Lions app for scheduling and connections

  • Attend first-timer meetups and branded activations (early in the week = lower pressure)

  • Show up early to events to meet organizers and get quality face time

  • Keep your LinkedIn QR code handy for quick scans

PRO TIP: Ask for intros. Cannes is a “who you know” kind of town, and most people are happy to connect you. And if you see any CRAFTSMAN+ team members? Say hi—we love creative minds.

5. Embrace the Chaos (FOMO Included)

Even the most seasoned Cannes-goers will tell you: you’ll miss something. That’s the deal. Last year’s biggest party might not have been the most impactful moment. Or maybe it was a quiet conversation at a side café that changed everything.

So don’t sweat every RSVP or late-night rumor. Choose presence over perfection.

Instead of racing to every activation, give yourself permission to experience Cannes:

  • Catch one unforgettable panel

  • Have a conversation that sparks something

  • Watch the sunset (preferably with a chilled glass of something delicious)

PRO TIP: At CRAFTSMAN+, we believe creativity flourishes when you slow down enough to connect. You might be there for work—but don’t forget the wonder.
